UN chief Ban Ki-Moon to send key UN officer Holmes to Myanmar

In order to strengthen disaster relief in Burma UN-Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon wants to send a high-ranking representative of the United Nations to Burma.
Ban told journalists Wednesday that in the next few days he would send Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes to Myanmar in a World Food Programmes plane.
Earlier in the day Ban had met with delegates of UN member states as well as representatives from the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and a Myanmar representative to discuss concrete arrangements.
Ban said leaders discussed working more closely together in the Myanmar emergency relief effort, but he emphasized that he would not support delivering aid goods without the full support of the military regime.
Leaders also discussed electing a UN-ASEAN coordinator who would establish a logistical aid center outside Myanmar. (dpa)
