Scottish police crack down on drink drivers

Scottish police crack down on drink driversScottish police have been urging people not to drive a vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and report any suspect of drink-driving to their local police.

At least 76 motorists have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol within the first week of the government's Festive Drink Drive campaign, while many others have so far been found unfit to drive.

From December 6 and December 13, as many as 5,200 motorists were breathalysed by police officers.

Superintendent Iain Murray, the chief of Road Policing for Police Scotland, requested people to cooperate with the police to deal with increasing cases of drink-driving.

Speaking about the issue, Murray said, "I urge people who suspect anyone of driving while under the influence to report it to the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, to report it to their local police office by dialing 101 or calling 999 in an emergency."

In Oxfordshire, more than fifty people have been arrested for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Christmas; while across the Thames Valley, a whopping 207 people had been arrested from December 1 to 22 for the same reason.

Meanwhile, a research has revealed that less than 25 per cent of motorists in Scotland are know that drink driving brings about a criminal record that stays with the lawbreaker for a minimum of 20 years.
