New Mexico proposes to host canceled border meeting

New Mexico proposes to host canceled border meetingHis state will host a meeting of U. S. and Mexican border governors that was canceled by Arizona amid a threatened boycott, says New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

The Albuquerque Journal reported on Friday that Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer canceled the annual meeting, scheduled for June 30, in response to a planned boycott by Mexican border state governors upset by Arizona's immigration law.

The newspaper has said that Richardson said he would offer to hold the meeting in Santa Fe in late September.

It was noted by the report that Richardson, a Democrat, has been a vocal opponent of the Arizona law and criticized Brewer for canceling the meeting of the border governors, who have come together annually for the past 27 years.

Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said, "Governor Richardson is working with other governors to craft a tight but productive agenda that focuses on the most pressing issues in the border region."

The Journal further reported that New Mexico last hosted the Border Governors Conference in 2004. Last year's event took place in the Mexican city of Monterrey. (With Inputs from Agencies)
