Benazir’s case may not be considered by UNIC

Pakistan Former Prime Minister Benazir BhuttoLahore, Dec 31: The UN Inquiry Commission (UNIC) may not consider Benazir Bhutto’s assassination case until it is presented to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by a UN member state.

The UNSC termed the matter as a “conspiracy against international peace and security”.

According to the UN charter, a UNIC is an inter-governmental commission dealing only with those cases that are presented to the UNSC by a UN member state.

The concerned state can also request any member of the UNSC to forward its case to the council for the formulation of a UNIC. The request is only entertained if the case presents a threat to international peace and security.

However, the charter maintains that any of the five permanent members of the UNSC can obstruct the constitution of a requested UNIC.

It stated that following the constitution of the commission, the member state that requests the commission has to fully cooperate with it.

Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has said that the party would seek support from Britain to investigate the matter. (ANI)
