High alert in J-K following violence over Benazir death

High alert in J-KSrinagar, Dec 29: A high security alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir following the violence that rocked Srinagar in the aftermath of former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto's assassination.

A large number of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed in the region. The security personnel have geared up to control violent protests and riots.

"The forces are alert everywhere. The Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir accompanied by the DGP conducted a review of the ground situation this morning," said SK Jain, IGP, CRPF, Srinagar.

According to official sources, security has been beefed up further not only in the hinterland, but by troops deployed along the Line of Control (LOC) as well. They added that the international border with Pakistan has been placed on maximum alert.

Protestors took to the streets, turned violent and started pelting stones on the security forces on Friday. In return, the forces resorted to teargas shelling to control the violent mob.

Security personnel including mediapersons were also injured during the incident.

Security forces faced a tough time trying to control the angry mob that was trying to attack a nearby police station.  (ANI)
