Hamid Ansari Elected Indian Vice President

Mohammd Hamid AnsariNew Delhi: After a three-cornered contest, former diplomatist and faculty member Mohammd Hamid Ansari was chosen as the vice president of India.

Ansari was an applicant of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the Left.

He overcame the main opponent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) contender Najma Heptullah and United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) applicant Rasheed Masood.

Hamid Ansari got 455 votes in opposition to 222 secured by Heptulla whereas Masood ended a poor third polling 75 votes. Ten votes were declared unacceptable.

Overall 762 associates of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha cast their votes. In the electoral college of 788, the effective strength of the two Houses is 783.
