Stuttgart - Jelena Jankovic hopes to return to the top of the women's tennis rankings now that she has regained her form at the start of the clay court season. The Serbian claimed the top spot in late 2008 but has slumped to a current number three with no title yet in 2009.
Jankovic on Tuesday attributed the slide to too much fitness training and personal problems in the off-season which made her slow and sluggish on the court.
London - Individual battles are sure to be key to the outcome of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, first-leg clash between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford, and United defender Nemanja Vidic knows he will be in for a tough time against Arsenal's front line. The Serbia defender has been a vital cog in United's march toward multiple honours this season and the defending champions will need him to be at his best to quell an Arsenal side that has arguably the best in England over the past two months.
New Delhi - The International Cricket Council (ICC) Tuesday shifted the 2011 World Cup secretariat to Mumbai from Pakistan's Lahore and said India would be hosting a bulk of the matches followed by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The move comes after the ICC removed Pakistan as co-host of the event due to the "uncertain political situation" in that country.
Rome - Rafael Nadal waited out steady rain Tuesday at the Rome Masters along with the rest of the field, his thoughts filled with fears that events on his clay-court surface of choice are in decline. "Every year for last years we have less tournaments on clay," said the top seed who lifted a fifth title at the weekend in Barcelona.
Munich - Veteran coach Jupp Heynckes was set to take over at Bayern Munich on Tuesday in a caretaker role after the sacking of Juergen Klinsmann. Heynckes, 63, will be in charge of his first training session after a formal presentation at the club's grounds in Munich.
Former German international Heynckes, who was Bayern coach between 1987 and 1991, is in charge for just four weeks - the last five games of the season.
Melbourne, Apr. 28 : Ex-Olympian swimmer Ian Thorpe''s contract with Foxtel is finished and will not be renewed.
According to insiders, Thorpe's lucrative million-dollar television contract was terminated as he had lost interest in his once-promising media career.
Media sources yesterday claimed Thorpe had in recent times become a reluctant participant in the Foxtel relationship as he focuses increasingly on his university study and the years lost to schooling while in the pool.
