Fear of PPP sweeping polls could delay polls in Pakistan
Karachi, Jan 1: The delay in the holding of elections in Pakistan could be the fear among the political parties supporting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) could muster a massive victory in the polls through a sympathy wave, following the assassination of its former Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
Following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, it seems difficult for the Pakistan Muslim League-Q to win the election and give constitutional cover to the amendments it has introduced.
The interim Pakistan Government also fears that if PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) win majority seats, they could block recent amendments to the Constitution and restore supremacy of Parliament.
Ruling PML-Q leaders have already suggested to the government that the election should be postponed in the wake of Benazir’s assassination. (ANI)
