London, Feb. 8: The application of Sharia law and punishment has reportedly sickened people in the West, including British Muslims. So much so, that a majority of these Muslims are not in favour of introducing Sharia laws in the country.

Medieval punishments such as beheadings and stoning to death, or having hands or legs cut and whippings, has left a scar on the minds of Muslims in Britain, reports The Sun.

They stress that these punishments — known as Hadd penalties — are the extreme end of a religious legal system that covers virtually every aspect of life in many Muslim countries, especially in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In Arabic, sharia means the clear, well-trodden path to water.

The laws are drawn directly from the Koran — the Muslim holy book — as well as the Sunnah, which are the words, example and way of life of the Prophet Muhammad.

All human actions are put into one of five categories — obligatory, recommended, permitted, disliked and forbidden.

In recent years, for instance, the Government has tried to develop special Islamic mortgages for British Muslims.

British Muslims welcome such moves. Many oppose any further move to introduce Sharia law here as they stress that the Koran makes clear that Muslims living in a non-Islamic country like Britain should follow its laws. (ANI)
